We all have "those days"-- days when we're in a bit of a slump, days when we feel lonely, days when we just want some pep in our step and joy in our hearts. I'm currently having one of those days, so I though I would share a few of the things I do to lift my head back up and put a smile on my face. I hope you enjoy them!
1. Open your Blinds... or Better Yet, Your Windows
If it's a sunny day, let some of that sunshine shine on you. It is amazing how much energy you can get from the sun. I just opened the blinds in my office, and I have to admit that I'm now smiling. A beautiful sky and a few streams of light can really brighten a place up!
2. Drink Water (flavored if possible)
If you're feeling weak and lethargic, odds are water could help you. Most of us don't drink nearly as much as we should, so here's to aiming for those 8 glasses a day! If you put a lime in your glass, you'll feel even more energetic. Let the zest bring some zip to your day, it's healthy too!
3. Light a Candle
If anxiety has caught your foot and you can't help but feel weighted down by pressure around you, light a candle and take time for some hygge (step 4). Candles create such a soothing environment. They not only offer wonderful scents, which can be uplifting; but they are also simply beautiful to watch burn. The sight of a burning candle is an allure that will never grow old for me.
4. Take a Hygge Break
Take a few minuets away from whatever you're doing to create a bit of cozy in your day. Grab a fuzzy blanket, make a cup of tea, and enjoy time with a favorite book or craft. This little detox from your daily activities will help you unwind, which we all need to do. I personally enjoy listening to audio books while I color in my adult coloring book.
5. Call a Friend
Odds are, some of your friends could really use a phone call too. They are probably overwhelmed or board as well. So whether or not you have to call a few people only to reach their voicemail, keep dialing until someone picks up. I love speaking with friends; and some of the best conversation I've had have come from calling friends on a random day at an odd time. When my usual phone buddies are busy, I love to reach out to people I haven't spoken with in a while. I am sure that there are plenty of people out there who would love to receive a friendly call from you!
6. Water Your Plants
I am hoping that you at least have one plant in your home, because plants bring extra life to a home. Plants are alive, they produce oxygen, and they are usually quite cheerful. If you do not already know, I have a plethora of plants living within my home. The step of watering them particularly gives me joy, because it allows me to care for them. Additionally, when I water my plants, I am reminded that I have kept them alive thus far. What an accomplishment! Hint, hint: if you don't have any plants, I highly recommend that you get one. Hardy plants such as money trees and pothos are great for people who are new to the plant loving life, as they are quite easy to care for.
7. Stretch
Working out can sometimes feel like it's only for overachievers. When that mindset hits, stretch! Stretching is a wonderful way to get your blood flowing and your mood improving. You'll feel not only more awake after stretching but also accomplished and thus happier!
8. Go to the Library
Now I know that this step requires leaving your house; but I feel like you're ready. If you've gotten as much joy out of the past few steps as I have, then you should have pep in your step. The library is a magical place filled with quite people you don't have to talk to and helpful people you can talk to (librarians). I tend to visit my library multiple times a week. The staff are gems and the environment is absolutely pleasant. I love exploring shelves and picking out books that I can home with me for free. If you have never visited your local library, please go. Even non-readers will be able to enjoy the peace and quite of the lovely place.
9. Go for a Walk
For those of you who are dare devils, here is the big advice: take a walk. Fresh air can do anyone good, so why not take advantage of the vast open space outside of your home or office. I have to admit that taking a walk by yourself can seem intimidating, but once you get out there; you'll be happy you took that step! If you really don't want to walk around outside though, at least do a few laps around Target, your legs will be grateful. Warning: Target may tell you that you need to buy something though, so restraint is required.
