A Year of Reading

Updated: Oct 29, 2019

Over the past year, I fell in love with reading.

As a kid, I went to a reading tutor in the second grade, thus labeling myself from that point on as a bad reader. I am an overachiever and recovering perfectionist, so I always stayed away from things that I didn't excel at. This past year, I overcame my trepidation around books. What changed? I found great books.

As a new wife in a new home in a new state, I found the need to nest. I wanted to create a perfect home, learn how to be the perfect (working) housewife, and thus, become the perfect wife. I can't say that my achievements went unreached, because I did become quite skilled in the process of undertaking wifedom. What I can say is that a majority of the skills I acquired in the past year are due to the books I read. First, I found the knowledge I desired in the books (how to keep a happy and tidy home). Second, I found joy implementing the skills the books taught me. Third, I found out that you can enjoy reading.

As a result of reading the following books over the past year, I can say that I now know how to be a good housewife (while working a full time job). I can now say that my favorite genre is historical fiction. And, I can now say that I am great at reading. Even if it takes me longer to read a book than someone else, who cares,

if I enjoy it just as much as they do! With practice, my reading skills have improved; and in comparison to my avoid reading all cost childhood, I can now say that I started a read-for-fun book club with friends. It can happen kids, you just have to find the right book, magazine, or comic.
