How I Found My Style

After reading the Marie Kondo books, one inevitably ends up with fewer clothes in their closet. It is simply a fact of nature in the 21st century.
I have already mentioned that in the past year I tried to become the "perfect" wife. I read homemaking books, styled my home, and tidied to my heart's content. What I did not mention was that I enjoyed learning about fashion in the process.
While tidying my home, I tidied my wardrobe and zoned in on my favorites. I figured out that I like wearing warm colors, favor gold metals, and could live every day of my life in a long colorful dress. I learned that a two color rule is a great way to keep an outfit tamed, that neutral shoes and sweaters are wardrobe gems, and that texture is a great way to add life to your ensemble. I neutralized a lot of my closet to beiges, pinks, and whites while adding patterned shoes, wicker purses, and fluffy scarves. My style now has boundaries, and my budget is grateful.
Many people say that you should invest in high quality pieces you love, but this is much easier to do when you know what type of clothing you value most. Learning that I prefer pinks, reds, and purples, has allowed me to pass over green and blue items I once thought I needed in stores. Contrary to popular belief, a person does not need to own an item in every color of the rainbow. Additionally, it is much easier to identify pieces that are perfect for you when you know what style of clothing you done on a day to day basis. As mentioned before, for me it's long dresses. I now can zoom past any dress above my calves when shopping, because I know that I'd much rather spend money on a maxi dress.
Do you know what colors you prefer and what pieces you prefer? If not, I highly recommend you jump into the adventure of determining your style. After your journey, you will not only love what you wear that much more but also be able to more easily identify pieces that fit YOU!
