Are you interested in reading but unable to find a great series or novel? Search no further and think no more, for I have the series for you. Rhys Bowen’s The Royal Spyness Series is a masterful work of romantic comedy. Set in 1930s England, the series follows Lady Georgiana Rannoch, a broke girl in her early twenties who happens to be thirty-fourth in line to the British throne. Georgie, the incredibly realistic character everyone can relate to, is known for her clumsiness, fashion missteps, and innocent romantic heart. She willingly works to provide food for herself but is often halted in her efforts as members of the royal family frown upon her acting in such a middle class manner. When needing a place to stay or searching for a warm meal, she often finds herself working at the order of Queen Mary, which lands her in various glamorous yet dangerous situations. During her trying adventures, she acts as a lady after my own heart, when she sticks to her honorable roots in environments that constantly tempt her to misstep.
Bowen’s work has captivated me in a way that only Pride and Prejudice and The Scarlet Pimpernel have ever done before. I laughed, awed, and was in constant suspense every time I opened one of her books. The series also transported me across the pond and to Nice, Africa and beyond on the most dreamy adventures. We may not all be born into a royal British family, so that is why we can be so grateful to Ms. Bowen for putting her thoughts into written words.
After finishing Crowned and Dangerous, number ten in the series, I was unable to hide my excitement any longer, and thus, felt the need to write about the historically enchanting works of art. Crowned and Dangerous takes Georgiana to Ireland in an effort to clear the name of her future father-in-law, Lord Kilhenny. You get a glimpse of Dublin’s street scene, fancy hotels, and local culture; but most enjoyably, you also get a peek into country living, as Georgie and her friends frequent a humble family member's estate. While attempting to solve a mystery and vindicate Lord Kilhenny, Georgie also has to deal with modern day problems such as meeting her fiancé’s ex girlfriends and obstacles that could prevent her from wedding the Honorable Darcy O’Mara.
Whether you are up for romance, mystery, comedy, British lifestyle, or historical fiction, you will love this series, my friend. I hope you can enjoy these books as much as I have, because they have provided me many laughs and royal escapes on otherwise boring days at home.
